Description
- Magnetic core memory, 8 KB.
- This has nothing to do with Norsk Data, it's from an IBM 1401, but I'm fascinated by core memory and have therefore included here.
- Each square of core memory holds (40 x 25) 1000 bits.
- Four squares in each frame, that's 4000 bits.
- There are 17 frames in the memory block, which gives us 17 * 4000 = 68000 bits.
- One frame is used for parity, that's gives us 64000 data bits or 8000 bytes.
- This is also written on the top cover of the memory block, 8K
- And the whole memory module weights only 4.6 kg.
- My telephone has 128 GB of memory, should this be done with this kind of core memory it would be:
- a memory module with the size of approx 42 x 42 x 42 meter.
- and with a weight of approx 77175 metric tons.
- not easily to fit in your pocket :-D
- Price:
- 8 KB core memory, approx 9.500,- NOK (1974)
- 128 GB core memory, approx 159.383.552.000,- NOK (1974)
- 128 GB micro SD card, approx 200,- NOK (2020)
